There are lots of types of improv out there. There's long form, short form, just about anything you can imagine. There's even an improv played in the dark! Short form improv is typically what you would see in Who's Line Is It Anyway? Games that last about 2 to 5 minutes with very defined standard rules. Most of the games most of the time are very funny and quick. Wit and snappy comebacks are abundant. Long form improv includes, but is not limited to, what is called a Harold. This game lasts as long as the show typically. Players play several different scenes around a common suggestion. The scenes are usually longer than 5 minutes and build up to something profound, funny, sad, or just plain ole truthful. There are lots of different types of long form games though. Some have stricter rules. Remember when you were a kid and you played make-believe for hours on end? That's long form improv.
So, how's Gag Order different?
Well, we don't want to expose trade secrets, but we will. We do what is affectionately called a shlong. It's a combo of short and long form games that flow from one to the other without the typical MC to move you along and break up the pace. We find that we can be more truthful in this form. And truth is funny. And it's heart breaking. And it's compelling. And it's real. And it's a heck of a lot of other things. But the point is no matter what happens in our scenes we stick to the idea that we are all human and we must play that way.
I haven't every seen another troupe do just what we do. But if there is one, we'd love to meet and pick your brains!
If this type of improv interests you or you just want to know more, come see one of our shows. Here's our calendar so you can see when and where we are playing. If you have a question, please email us! I love email and so does Jerry!
